As we get older, and especially if we have spent years exposed to the sun’s rays, many of us are bound to develop age and sun spots – often called liver spots.
These spots can appear on different parts of the body. Most people find them unattractive and begin to feel self-conscious about their presence. But you don’t have to live with liver spots.
At Effective MedSpa & Wellness Center in Gambrills, we offer Maryland residents a number of treatments that can help remove or reduce age, liver and sun spots.
From products that can reduce these unsightly spots to laser treatments, Effective MedSpa — located in the Village at Waugh Chapel — can help you and your skin regain a youthful appearance and get rid of pesky liver spots.
What Are Age Spots?
Age spots, often referred to as liver spots, are typically tan, brown or black spots that are flat on the skin. The spots’ size can vary and they usually show up on your face, arms, hands and shoulders.
Not surprisingly, these are all areas that are often exposed to the sun.
For those over age 50, age spots are extremely common. But those younger than 50 can also get liver spots. Younger people who spend too much time in the sun are the most likely to develop these spots.
Most age spots are not harmful to your health. But if you see changes in the shape or size of spots, it’s best to see a doctor to make sure the spots are not cancerous.
The best way to prevent age spots is to reduce your exposure to the sun and wear sun-protection products on your skin. But if you already have age spots, Effective MedSpa can help. If you’re not happy about your age spots, we offer treatments that can lighten or remove them.
Some age spot treatments that may be right for you include:
Bleaching creams: These can be used on their own or with retinoids, which can fade age spots slowly over a period of a few months. Using sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is key if you go for medication treatments to reduce age spots. These treatments are painless, but some people may experience temporary itching and redness on treated areas of the skin.
Laser Therapy: More and more people are turning to laser treatments to remove age spots. These lasers employ intense pulsed-light therapies that are designed to destroy melanin-producing cells, but leave the skin’s surface undamaged. Laser treatments can require several visits, but treatment plans vary from person to person. After treatment, you will notice that your age spots will fade away after several weeks or months.
Many clients choose laser therapy because it has few side effects. But you may see some skin discoloration afterward. Again, sun protection is key to protecting skin after laser therapy.
Freezing: Known as cryotherapy, this treatment uses liquid nitrogen to destroy age spots. Your skin will appear lighter as it heals. Freezing is most often used to combat a lone age spot, or a small cluster of spots. This approach may irritate the skin, but typically only temporarily.
Dermabrasion: This technique actually sands down the skin’s top layer with a rotating brush. This helps remove surface skin and allows a fresh layer to replace it.
Chemical peels: This technique uses mild acid to burn away skin to remove age spots. As skin peels, new skin takes its place.
Whether you call them age spots, sun spots or liver spots, many of us will develop them as we get older. But we don’t have to live with them!
